2020/02/20

President Xi Jinping spoke with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on the phone on 20 February.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the top priority of the Chinese government. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the health workers and people all across China, we are seeing some positive developments. Not only do we have the confidence, capability and determination to win this battle, we will also minimize its impact and strive to meet this year's economic and social development targets. Xi noted that while focusing on this immediate challenge to resolutely end the outbreak, we will take a long-term perspective, draw experience from the response, and strengthen our epidemic prevention and control mechanism and the national public health emergency management system.

Xi Jinping emphasized that China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners with a fine tradition of mutual assistance. Since the COVID-19 outbreak began, Pakistan immediately spoke out in support of China, donated precious supplies despite needs at home, and maintained all normal exchanges between the two countries. The National Assembly and Senate of Pakistan have both passed resolutions extending full support for China's battle against the epidemic. This phone call is another example of sympathy and solidarity. All these show that China and Pakistan are true friends that stand by each other through thick and thin and good friends that share weal and woe. We will take care of Pakistani brothers and sisters in China the same way we treat our own citizens.

Xi Jinping noted that the China-Pakistan relationship is growing from strength to strength. The relationship is a high priority for China in its neighborhood diplomacy. China will continue to work with Pakistan to build a high-quality China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and to support and cooperate with each other on major regional and international issues. China-Pakistan relations will be seen as a fine example for building a community with a shared future for mankind.

On behalf of the Pakistani government and people, Prime Minister Imran Khan extended sympathies to the Chinese people over the COVID-19 outbreak, and commended China for its resolute response. He noted that China's effective prevention and control efforts have curbed the spread of the virus globally. He added that the whole world appreciates and commends China for its response, and that no other country could have done better than China.

The Prime Minister thanked the Chinese side for the thoughtful care and help provided to the Pakistani nationals in China, and expressed Pakistan's readiness to offer continued assistance for China's fight against the epidemic. Pakistan is fully confident that China will defeat the epidemic and all Pakistani people will stand firmly with the brotherly Chinese people under all circumstances.
