Li Keqiang Meets with Emperor Akihito of Japan

On the morning of May 10, 2018 local time, Premier Li Keqiang met at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo with Emperor Akihito of Japan.

Li Keqiang first conveyed President Xi Jinping’s sincere greetings to Emperor Akihito. Li Keqiang expressed that this year coincides with the 40th anniversary of the signing of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship. China hopes to review the spirit of the Treaty through this visit and promote the China-Japan relations back to the normal track and for new development.

Li Keqiang expressed that during my visit, I met with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Speakers of the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors of the National Diet, and people from all parties and all walks of life of Japan, and I will also travel to Hokkaido for a visit to promote exchanges between both countries at local level. It is hoped that China will work with Japan to jointly push bilateral relations for long-term, healthy, stable and forward-looking development. China stands ready to, together with Japan, enhance personnel exchanges, continuously consolidate public opinion foundation of bilateral relations, and increase understanding and feelings between the two peoples.

Emperor Akihito expressed that he was glad to see that Premier Li Keqiang paid an official visit to Japan in this important and crucial year. It is hoped that Japan-China relations will achieve further development through this visit. Emperor Akihito said that he always recalled the moment when he was warmly welcomed by the Chinese people in his visit to China over 20 years ago. And it still impresses him today. That visit made him strongly feel that the hearts of the two peoples were connected. He sincerely hopes to build a better future for Japan-China relations through exchanges between the two peoples. He wishes Premier Li Keqiang a successful visit in Japan.
